An Introduction

Born and raised on the Southern Kenai Peninsula, I am a dedicated educator with a passion for innovative teaching practices and a commitment to the holistic development of my students. With a Bachelor's degree in history, a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus on social studies, and a Master's in Educational Leadership, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to my role. Holding certifications in middle and high school social studies and language arts, I am highly qualified to nurture and inspire young minds. Currently, I am engaged in pursuing my National Board Certification and exploring various microcredentials and side projects. When I'm not immersed in the world of education, my family and I enjoy hiking, boating, fishing, reading, gaming, and traveling, embracing the wonders of nature and diverse experiences.

My journey into educational innovation began during the homeschooling years of my eldest daughter's middle and high school education. This ignited my curiosity and fueled my exploration of cutting-edge, research-based methodologies. During this time, I also dedicated myself to volunteering and working with Girl Scouts of Alaska while homeschooling my two younger children. These experiences deepened my belief in a whole-child approach to education, with a strong emphasis on environmental competency. In my classroom, you'll find students engaged in various tasks, moving comfortably within a homelike environment, fostering an atmosphere of active learning.

At Nikolaevsk School, we place great value on student reflection and ownership of their education. We strive to empower students to chart their own learning journeys through project-based and play-based learning, offering a wide range of both on and offline learning options. Social-emotional learning is at the core of our approach, with the implementation of programs such as the Zones of Regulation, Sources of Strength, and Habits of Mind. Particularly in these uncertain and challenging times, I am honored to mentor and support our students as they develop resilience, become lifelong learners, and pursue their goals, preparing them for a future filled with possibilities.

Join me on this blog as we embark on a journey of insights from a rural educator, sharing experiences, strategies, and ideas that can inspire fellow teachers, homeschooling parents, and education enthusiasts alike. Together, let's shape the future of education and build a strong foundation of trust, innovation, and empowerment in the lives of our students.
